Govt reviewing validity period of in-principle approvals for foreign workers: Tan See Leng

The government is reviewing the validity period of in-principle approvals for foreign workers, as uncertainty over pandemic control in many source countries has led to a significant increase in workers waiting to enter Singapore. Automatic extensions for those in construction, marine and process sectors are due to end in June. In Parliament on May 10, Second Minister for Manpower Tan See Leng said actual entry approvals are given separately, based on available quarantine facilities and other considerations.

Singapore has active infection clusters at Changi Airport and Pasir Panjang Terminal. Mr Ong has described these places as "points of vulnerability".

Transport Ministry reviewing safety measures for lorries ferrying workers: Amy Khor

A review is underway to ensure the safety of workers on board lorries, following two serious accidents in the past month. The last review of transporting workers on board lorries was 13 years ago. Senior Minister of State for Transport Amy Khor said suggestions such as implementing speed limits and retrofitting seat belts may increase the risk of accidents or injury instead. She added that additional costs arising from new regulations may put more strain on construction firms, which are facing financial pressure due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
