WHO sees uptick in COVID-19 cases worldwide in past seven days

The World Health Organization reports they have seen an increase in COVID-19 cases worldwide in the past seven weeks, with Vietnam tallying the highest new infections in Western Pacific. The WHO attributes this to increased mobility and eased travel restrictions.

President Biden bans travel from South Africa and seven other nations

President Biden announced Friday that he is restricting travel from eight countries in southern Africa over concerns about Omicron, a new COVID-19 variant circulating in the region. The restrictions start on Monday and apply to non-U.S. residents. Weijia Jiang reports.

Birmingham knifeman who killed one and injured seven in random attacks gets life sentence

A man who stabbed people at random, killing one and seriously injuring seven others, has been sentenced to life with a minimum of 21 years.

Zephaniah McLeod carried out the attacks within 90 minutes in the early hours of 6 September last year, as people were enjoying a night out in Birmingham.

CCTV and dashcam footage captured him walking calmly through city centre streets, stabbing people and moving on.
