Rat-infested prison rife with violence say inspectors

A rat-infested institution that’s rife with violence and where inmates are increasingly self-harming. That’s the finding of a damning report into Chelmsford Prison.

The report has been released just months after inspectors issued a rare, urgent warning. Its title, Violence and death in a declining prison, encapsulates the issues.

Justice Secretary Dominic Raab today promised improvements. But campaigners argue it’s just one example of many failings across the entire prison system.

Windrush: Home Office should no longer run compensation scheme, say MPs

MPs have criticised the way the Windrush compensation scheme operates and called for the Home Office to be stripped of responsibility for running it.

The cross-party Commons Home Affairs Committee said the scheme should be transferred to an independent organisation to increase trust and encourage more applications.

The MPs said the design of the scheme contained the same "bureaucratic insensitivities" that led to the Windrush scandal in the first place, which was a "damning indictment of the Home Office".

We also spoke to Anthony Bryan, a victim of the Windrush scandal, who had lived and worked in the UK for 50 years when he was wrongly classified as an illegal immigrant and almost deported.
