97 SAF personnel appointed as Senior Military Experts

Senior Military Experts have been described as key personnel as the Singapore Armed Forces continues to harness new technology. At an appointment ceremony on Jan 12, Senior Minister of State for Defence Heng Chee How said innovation is one of their key strengths. Military experts are those trained in areas such as engineering, intelligence, military medicine and cybersecurity. 97 personnel were appointed as Senior Military Experts at decentralised ceremonies due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Exercise Wallaby 2021: Annual SAF exercise resumes but scaled down to about 580 personnel

Exercise Wallaby 2021 saw about 580 Singapore Armed Forces personnel as well as platforms from the Singapore Army, Navy and Air Force taking part. In 2019, 3,000 personnel and 300 platforms were involved, while last year’s exercise was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The annual exercise is held at the Shoalwater Bay Training Area in Queensland, Australia. It’s the first time the upgraded Chinook helicopters are training with the Republic of Singapore Navy. The CH-47Fs were delivered in May 2021 and conducted exercises like deck-landing.

Exercise Forging Sabre: SAF uses data analytics, AI to make faster and more robust decisions

Fighting smarter, more efficiently, and staying agile on the battlefield. Data analytics and artificial intelligence are being harnessed as the Singapore Armed Forces takes part in major overseas drills as part of Exercise Forging Sabre in the US state of Idaho. The unilateral exercise, which involves about 800 air force and army personnel, ends on Sept 25.

They will now take on roles where in-depth expertise is required in areas such as engineering, intelligence, military medicine and cybersecurity. The training also includes honing their leadership competency and military domain knowledge. The appointment ceremonies were held in decentralised locations due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

About 350 servicemen take part in physical SAF Day Parade 2021

Around 350 Singapore Armed Forces servicemen took part in the physical SAF Day Parade 2021. President Halimah Yacob officiated the ceremony and presented the State Colours to this year’s Best Combat Unit — the 1st Commando Battalion. The parade was also streamed online. Last year, a ceremony was conducted instead of a parade due to COVID-19. In a pre-recorded message, Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen commended the SAF personnel for their resourcefulness and commitment, to stand ready to serve the nation despite the pandemic.

SAF has achieved “herd immunity” against COVID-19: Ng Eng Hen

Singapore’s Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen has said that the SAF has achieved "herd immunity" against COVID-19. Eighty-three per cent of the Defence Ministry and SAF’s active personnel are fully vaccinated. The aim is to hit 95 per cent. Vaccination is part of the military’s strategy to stay sharp in an endemic COVID-19 environment, along with testing and cohorting.

1st Commando Battalion named SAF Best Combat Unit for 35th time

The 1st Commando Battalion has been named the Singapore Armed Forces’ overall Best Combat Unit for the 18th straight time. This is its 35th win since the SAF Best Unit Competition was introduced in 1969. The battalion will have the State Colours presented to them during the SAF Day Parade on July 1. The RSS Fortitude was named the Best Maritime Security Unit while the RSAF’s 143 squadron clinched the Best Fighter Squadron title for the fifth time.
