China’s birth rate falls to record low

China’s birth rate has fallen to its lowest level in more than seven decades despite the government’s efforts to arrest the decline. Around 10.6 million babies were born last year, down from 12 million in 2020. That is a rate of around 7.5 per 1,000 people and it marks the fifth straight year of decline. The figure also barely outnumbers the number of deaths, which came in at around 10.1 million.
