‘Urgent talks’ over Channel crossing deaths to be held by Priti Patel

Priti Patel will hold ‘urgent talks’ with her European counterparts this week over Channel crossings after the deaths of 27 people.

The home secretary spoke today to the Dutch migration minister on the phone. The call came after Ms Patel was dis-invited from a meeting of European interior ministers.

Tonight they agreed that an EU plane would patrol the French coast. But the French said they wouldn’t be held hostage by Britain’s domestic politics.

Channel 4 News has spoken to the family of the first named victim of Wednesday’s tragedy in the Channel.

They confirmed that Mariam Nouri Hamadameen, a student from Kurdistan in her twenties, died trying to reach British shores.

While authorities and families work to identify those who lost their lives, the political fallout has escalated.

Today, the French government disinvited Home Secretary Priti Patel from a planned meeting aimed at tackling the issue of people smuggling after Boris Johnson had earlier published a letter to President Macron on Twitter calling for greater action – a move that angered the French.

It’s five years since Jo Cox was murdered in her Yorkshire constituency: another MP Stephen Timms suffered life-threatening injuries 11 years ago, and constituency aide Andrew Pennington was killed in an attack just over 20 years ago, as he defended the MP Nigel Jones who was badly injured.

While a neo-Nazi was jailed for life in 2019 for a plot to kill the Labour MP Rosie Cooper.
