Power crisis in India as electricity demand surges while coal output slumps

India is facing a coal crisis. Its power minister has warned that the country’s energy crunch could drag on for another half a year. A surge in electricity demand and a slump in local coal output has meant stockpiles are dangerously low. At the end of September, power stations had an average of just four days’ worth of coal. Coal accounts for about 70% of India’s electricity generation, and consumption is expected to rise in the next few years.

China’s industrial output, retail sales growth slow in Aug as COVID-19 outbreaks delay recovery

Signs that recovery in the world’s number two economy is faltering – fresh coronavirus outbreaks and supply disruptions, a drag on retailers, factory owners and property investors alike. Retail sales growth plunged to the slowest since August 2020, as COVID-19 restrictions held back consumer spending. Factories also churned slower, with industrial production easing to its weakest level since July 2020. Meanwhile, the property sector is also under stress. New home prices in 70 major cities continued their downward trend, growing at the slowest pace in eight months.

Singapore’s manufacturing output increases at faster pace of 27.5% in June

Singapore’s manufacturing output grew for an eighth straight month in June 2021. It jumped 27.5% from a year ago, owing to a low-base effect due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but overall factory output shrank 3% on a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis. The biomedical manufacturing cluster expanded the most, at around 43%. This was driven by the pharmaceutical segment, which produced more active ingredients and biological products. However, one analyst warned the situation is still volatile, even with overall manufacturing expected to maintain its growth momentum.
