Everyone needs to “uphold safe management measures” with Chinese New Year approaching: Lawrence Wong

Minister Lawrence Wong on Friday (Jan 21) urged people in Singapore to be socially responsible, with Chinese New Year approaching. “We need everyone to do your part, uphold safe management measures wherever you go and test yourself regularly … especially with the upcoming Chinese New Year festivities.

“If you’re feeling under the weather, please stay at home and rest rather than go out and do New Year visitations. If you’re planning to visit family members when seniors are present, you may want to take an ART test in advance to ensure that you are free from infection and you do not transmit the virus when you go out visiting.”

Not the time to remove COVID-19 vaccination differentiated measures in Singapore: Ong Ye Kung

“If everyone adopts the attitude that ‘We did not get vaccinated because others will and then we free ride on the rest’, then our society will never have achieved the high level of resistance it has today,” said Health Minister Ong Ye Kung in a news conference on Friday (Jan 21). He pointed out that two thirds of ICU beds are occupied by people who are not fully vaccinated, and said it it not the right time to remove vaccination differentiated safe management measures (VDS).

"We have not seen the full impact of the Omicron wave in Singapore and now is not the right time to take a gamble to remove VDS on the hunch that Omicron may be less severe for the infected unvaccinated," he said.

Cathay Pacific offers captains bonus to fly under strict quarantine measures

Hong Kong’s zero-COVID policy is pushing Cathay Pacific to use cash to entice staff to fly. The move could be the airline’s last-ditch attempt to retain employees and to encourage pilots to fly under strict quarantine measures. It is offering captains a bonus of up to US$3,700 to fly four or more so-called "closed loops". That is a route where crew could spend more than a month either in the air, or isolating at a hotel before returning home.
