Malaysia’s High Court orders UMNO president Zahid to enter defence on 47 graft charges

Malaysia’s High Court has ordered former deputy prime minister and UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to enter his defence on 12 criminal breach of trust charges, eight counts of bribery and 27 charges of money laundering. He’s accused of using millions of dollars belonging to a family-run foundation, Yayasan Akalbudi, to pay for his personal credit cards, insurance policy and vehicle licences. Mr Ahmad Zahid, who faces another 40 corruption charges separately, has opted to give a sworn statement and will be first to testify when the defence hearing begins on April 26.

Malaysia’s armed forces to focus on helping flood victims in Pahang, Selangor and Kelantan

Malaysia’s armed forces chief has warned against complacency as the country recovers from the worst flooding in decades. The military is being deployed to Pahang, Selangor and Kelantan to help with rescue missions. The overall death toll has climbed to 37. There are fears that the count will go up, with at least 10 people still missing. More than 68,000 people have been evacuated to relief centres, while hundreds of roads remain closed. Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has called for all frontline agencies to provide daily reports on their relief operations.

Contesting candidates and parties are making their final appeals for support, ahead of tomorrow’s (Dec 18) polls. 1.2 million people will cast their ballots, with 349 candidates competing for 82 seats.
