January 18, 2022: Tonga Islands, Volcanic eruption, Texas synagogue, Johnson lockdown party, Yemen

January 18, 2022: Tonga Islands, Volcanic eruption, Texas synagogue, Johnson lockdown party, Yemen

1. All the homes on one of Tonga’s small outer islands were destroyed in the massive volcanic eruption and tsunami, with three people so far confirmed dead, the government said on Tuesday in its first update since the disaster hit.

2. Tonga’s massive underwater volcanic eruption could deliver long-lasting damage to coral reefs, erode coastlines and disrupt fisheries, say scientists studying satellite images and looking to the past to project the future of the remote region.

3. Worshippers invited a stranger into a Texas synagogue when he knocked on their door and offered him tea before he brandished a gun and held them hostage in a 10-hour siege the FBI called a "terrorism-related matter, in which the Jewish community was targeted.”

4. A former senior adviser to Britain’s Boris Johnson said on Monday he was willing to "swear under oath" that the prime minister knew a party was being held at his residence during a COVID-19 lockdown, accusing him of lying to parliament.

5. Air strikes by the Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen’s Houthi group on the capital Sanaa killed at least 20 people overnight, including civilians, Houthi media and residents said, in one of its deadliest attacks since 2019.

No 10 apologises to Queen over lockdown parties on eve of Prince Philip’s funeral

This is not so much party politics but the politics of parties as Downing Street was forced to apologise to Buckingham Palace for the two parties held at Number 10 on the eve of Prince Philip’s funeral – saying it was "deeply regrettable that this took place at a time of national mourning".

Since then the apologies have come thick and fast: one from PM’s former communications chief James Slack over his leaving do. He now works at the Sun newspaper. While Kate Josephs – who was head of the government’s Covid taskforce – said she was "truly sorry" for drinks held in December 2020.

No word yet from Mr Johnson himself, who is supposed to be self-isolating from a family case of Covid in his Downing Street flat.
