South Korea’s plans to live with the COVID-19 virus have suffered a major setback as infections surge again. Authorities are reimposing COVID-19 curbs from Dec 6. There are also heightened fears that Omicron could worsen the situation. The country has so far reported six cases.

Quarantine measures do not apply to travellers using Singapore-South Korea VTL

Travellers from Singapore will still be able to fly to South Korea under both countries’ quarantine-free arrangement. The notice was put up on the South Korean Embassy’s website, despite Seoul earlier saying that all travellers would be isolated for 10 days upon arrival. That move had sparked a flurry of activity among holidaymakers and tour agencies,
who scrambled to make sense of the announcement.

The military chiefs of the US and South Korea have agreed to update contingency war plans, even as they urge North Korea to return to the negotiating table. South Korea halts further easing of COVID-19 restrictions as new cases continue to rise

South Korea is steering the middle course as COVID-19 puts a strain on healthcare, and concerns grow over the new Omicron variant. North Korea: International sanctions and the COVID-19 pandemic hit people’s livelihoods | DW News

North Korea has been facing UN sanctions since 2006 over its nuclear weapons programme. There are nearly a dozen UN sanctions that target individuals and the government. This in addition to sanctions from the European Union and the United States. UN sanctions are enforced by individual member states which isn’t straightforward or even easy.

International sanctions and the COVID-19 pandemic have hit people’s livelihoods there so hard that a UN expert is warning that vulnerable groups are at risk of starving. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has acknowledged the food situation in his country is tense. So, the regime in Pyongyang is promoting alternative sources of nutrition.

South Korea may impose emergency measures as new COVID-19 cases hit daily record

South Korea could be heading for another COVID-19 emergency. On Nov 24, the country reported a record of over 4,000 new infections — the highest daily spike since January 2020. Authorities said the latest outbreak is far worse than they had expected. A religious group has been linked to a new cluster of about 200 cases. About 90% of the group is unvaccinated and are aged in their 60s and above. South Korea had planned to move to its second stage of reopening from mid-December.
