Hong Kong’s new modern art museum at center of censorship row | DW News

Asia’s largest gallery is set to open in Hong Kong this week. The towering 90-meter structure has been in the works for about a decade – and features a billion-dollar collection. But the M+ Museum is not without controversy – as it opens under a new restrictive political climate.

China imposed a national security law on Hong Kong in June, which critics say is an attack on the freedom of speech and meant to crush dissent. Anyone can be charged under a vague and broad law for undermining Beijing’s authority. Even artists.

Hong Kong’s new ‘patriots-only’ government to prioritise housing issues: Carrie Lam

Hong Kong has just conducted its first "patriots-only" poll to pick an election committee that votes for the next chief executive. Current chief executive Carrie Lam has defended the new electoral system, saying that it will improve governance and help solve people’s problems. She said the key priorities under the new political system imposed by China are: Solving Hong Kong’s housing shortage and increasing land supply. However, she would not confirm reports suggesting that Beijing has ordered property tycoons to pool resources and help solve Hong Kong’s housing crisis.

Hong Kong’s district councillors take oath of loyalty in closed-door ceremony

The first group of district councillors has pledged allegiance to Hong Kong. 24 have taken part in the closed-door ceremony, while one has been removed from office for not turning up. The oath-taking is a new requirement by the government to align local legislation with the national security law. The relationship between councillors and officials deteriorated rapidly after the 2019 elections, when the opposition camp swept 17 out of the 18 district councils, following months of anti-government protests. The next district council election is to be held in 2023.

Could Hong Kong’s new immigration law ban residents from leaving? | DW News

A new amendment to Hong Kong’s immigration law takes effect today. Critics say the change could give the government power to ban residents from leaving the city.
Hong Kong’s administrators say the law, part of China’s crackdown in Hong Kong, targets "illegal refugees." But it has prompted a growing exodus. The United Kingdom, Canada and Australia are offering extended work and residency permits to those who have left Hong Kong, and the US Congress is debating a bill to give special visas and refugee status to Hong Kong citizens fleeing political persecution.
