Singapore has urged the US and China to lead and work together in tackling global challenges. Speaking at the S Rajaratnam Lecture, Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat called on both countries to tap on their resources to advance international development. He said this will help the world better address the climate crisis and realise the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Mr Heng added that recent events — such as their joint COP26 declaration — have shown that both countries want to manage competition responsibly.

Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat said the relationship has grown from strength to strength since formal dialogue relations began thirty years ago. He was speaking at the opening ceremony of the 18th China-ASEAN Expo. Both China and ASEAN are each other’s largest trading partners, with trade growing in 2020 despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat has told India that the door to join the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership remains open. India had been one of more than a dozen countries involved in talks for the world’s largest free trade pact. But it eventually withdrew from RCEP, citing the need to safeguard the interests of its domestic industries. Mr Heng was speaking to Indian business leaders at a webinar. He also touted greater economic integration with the region, pointing out "tremendous opportunities" for Indian companies, especially in Southeast Asia.
