DOH claims lowest COVID-19 rate cases since July 2021

The Department of Health shows a total of 2.8 million confirmed COVID-19 cases as of Tuesday, with only 356 active cases, which is the lowest case count since July last year. Meanwhile, 2.7 million cases reflect the total amount of recoveries to date.

Over 1,000 maids have entered Singapore since July, MOM to increase entry approvals

More than 1,000 migrant domestic workers have entered Singapore since July through a commercial scheme by the Association of Employment Agencies, which ensures arrivals are in accordance with safe management measures. Minister of State for Manpower Gan Siow Huang said entry approvals are picking up as the regional COVID-19 situation improves. The MOM approved about 900 domestic workers entry each month from May to October, and more slots will be made available.

Singapore and India to link real-time payment systems by July 2022 for instant, low-cost transfers

Transferring money between Singapore and India is going to get easier. The two countries will link their real-time payment systems by July 2022. Singapore’s PayNow and India’s Unified Payments Interface will allow direct transfers between bank accounts. The Reserve Bank of India and the Monetary Authority of Singapore said the deal will allow users to make instant fund transfers on a reciprocal basis.

Singapore’s unemployment rate up for first time in 10 months in July

Singapore’s unemployment rate has risen for the first time in 10 months. The rate in July went up to 2.8% from 2.7% the month before. Authorities said tighter restrictions during the Phase 2 Heightened Alert likely caused a dip in demand for manpower in sectors like retail and F&B. Government data showed the resident unemployment rate rose from 3.5% to 3.7%, while unemployment among Singapore citizens rose from 3.7% to 3.9%.

Consumers have been spending on luxury items like watches and jewellery. This has helped Singapore’s July retail sales inch up 0.2 per cent from a year ago. It has been on the uptrend for six months in a row. Retail sales also saw a monthly increase of 0.8 per cent.
