IOC says pressuring China on human rights ‘not within its remit’ ahead of Winter Olympics

The International Olympic Committee has said it won’t challenge China over its human rights record ahead of the Beijing Winter Games. When asked about the treatment of Uighurs, the IOC said the body has no mandate to act. The US has pushed for major sponsors — including Visa and Airbnb — to boycott the Games over China’s rights record. In response, Beijing has accused US politicians of "politicising sports". The Beijing Winter Olympics are scheduled for February 2022, but foreign fans will be banned due to COVID-19 restrictions.
