MPs vote to overturn Owen Paterson’s immediate suspension after alleged lobbying rules breach

To cries of “shame” echoing around the Commons, MPs have voted to put former Conservative minister Owen Paterson’s suspension on hold, instead, opting to tear up parliament’s own disciplinary system.

It follows an investigation which found Mr Paterson had committed an "egregious breach" of lobbying rules, an investigation which he said "did not comply with natural justice".

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer vowed to boycott the new committee set up to overhaul the sleaze regulations. There is no other word for it, he said – "corruption".

No ‘immediate’ move to Covid Plan B says Sunak – but councils canvassed for thoughts

No plans to "immediately" move to Covid Plan B, the Chancellor’s language was deliberately careful today.

(Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)

This programme has seen a government email sent to councils last Friday asking for urgent feedback on pressures on the ground and their views on rolling out Plan B measures.

In the meantime the vaccination drive is being stepped up: NHS England said yesterday was the biggest day yet for Covid boosters, with 325,000 people given their jabs.

But is it all putting next week’s budget in the shadow of the pandemic yet again?

IPCC: World leaders will fail without immediate rapid reductions in emissions | DW News

World leaders will fail to honor their climate pledges unless they make "immediate, rapid and large-scale reductions" to greenhouse gas emissions, a long-awaited assessment finds.

Carbon pollution has risen to such extremes that a key threshold in the fight to stop climate change — limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) by the end of the century — will be crossed within the next 15 years. That is one of the key findings from a landmark report approved by delegates from 195 countries and published Monday by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The analysis, which comes amid record-breaking heat and rains that have rocked rich and poor countries alike, draws on more than 14,000 peer-reviewed studies to assess the physical science of climate change. It paints a sober picture of a planet warped beyond recognition by members of a single species in the space of just a few hundred years.

"This report is a reality check," said Valérie Masson-Delmotte, co-chair of the IPCC working group that prepared it.

This is a stark contrast to last week’s stance, when the government described the outbreak as "controllable". But they insist homegrown vaccines are effective against the Delta strain.
