Germany tightens restrictions as COVID-19 cases soar | DW News

In Germany, the fourth wave of COVID-19 infections continues to rage out of control. Health minister Jens Spahn says further restrictions are needed to slow the spread of the virus.
Here’s a look at the most significant of the new measures in Germany from today on.
Anyone going to work or using public transport will need to fulfil at least one of three criteria: be vaccinated, have recently recovered from infection, or show a negative COVID-19 test result. This is known in Germany as the 3G rule.
The eastern state of Saxony has already stepped up restrictions after a spike in new infections, but many residents remain skeptical about getting vaccinated.

Germany refuses to take in stranded migrants after calls from Minsk | DW News

Germany has rejected calls from Minsk for the European Union to take in migrants stranded at the Belarus-Poland border. EU member states have also made it clear they won’t be blackmailed by Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko.

He is demanding they take in thousands of migrants. They’re facing harsh winter conditions out in the forests along the border. More than 10 people have died in recent weeks trying to cross into the EU.

US warns against traveling to Germany – What are the consequences? | DW News

Germany has posted yet another record number of Covid-19 cases. For the first time the seven-day average has now reached almost 400 infections per 100,000 people. The worsening situation is having repercussions elsewhere.
The United States has warned its citizens against traveling to Germany – saying even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk of getting and spreading the virus. The US also elevated its travel warning for Denmark.

While vaccination levels in several European countries remain too low, in most places in Asia, it’s the opposite. Governments there have been able to convince their populations that getting vaccinated is the only way out of the pandemic. As Europeans prepare for another deadly winter, countries like Japan, Cambodia and Malaysia are now re-opening.
