Last year Chinese fishing vessels sailed to the edge of the Galapagos Islands’ territorial waters. This summer, the Associated Press and Spanish language broadcaster Univision documented the scale of Chinese fishing off the coast of South America.

Chinese fishing fleets threatening fragile Galapagos ecosystem

It is one of the remotest places on earth – rich in marine life and home to unique species of wildlife – but even the Galapagos islands have not escaped the impact of the pandemic. (Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)

And now Chinese industrial fishing fleets have also been plundering the waters off the Galapagos coast – putting its fragile ecosystem under even further strain.

Officials are rushing to vaccinate the population – in an effort to revive the islands’ multi-million pound tourism industry on which it so heavily depends.
