Rigorous selection process for infrastructure projects funded through SINGA borrowing: DPM Heng

Singapore will be able to borrow to pay for major infrastructure projects, such as new MRT lines, through borrowing. The Significant Infrastructure Government Loan Bill (SINGA) was passed in Parliament on May 10. Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat said the projects will go through a rigorous selection process before they can be funded through borrowing. He was responding to questions about safeguards to ensure sustainable spending. To prevent excessive burden on future generations, loans raised under SINGA cannot exceed S$90 billion.

DPM Heng conferred NTUC’s top May Day honour

Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat was conferred the top May Day Award for 2021 to recognise his contribution to workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. He was among 142 other union leaders and tripartite partners recognised by the labour movement at its annual award ceremony. The Medal of Honour presented to Mr Heng is only for those who have rendered distinguished service. As Finance Minister, he came up with policies to help workers upskill and get jobs. NTUC president Mary Liew applauded tripartite groups for sticking together through the crisis.
