Channel deaths: How the tragedy unfolded

On 24 November 2021, 27 people lost their lives in the English Channel after the boat they were travelling in capsized.

Survivors of the tragedy have claimed French and British authorities didn’t respond to calls for help amid conflicting information about whose waters they were in.

Using marine tracking data, survivor testimony and what authorities said happened, Sky News has learned how the incident unfolded.

‘Urgent talks’ over Channel crossing deaths to be held by Priti Patel

Priti Patel will hold ‘urgent talks’ with her European counterparts this week over Channel crossings after the deaths of 27 people.

The home secretary spoke today to the Dutch migration minister on the phone. The call came after Ms Patel was dis-invited from a meeting of European interior ministers.

Tonight they agreed that an EU plane would patrol the French coast. But the French said they wouldn’t be held hostage by Britain’s domestic politics.

Channel deaths: Prime Minister’s tweeted letter stirs controversy

The PM tweeted a letter he sent to French President Emmanuel Macron, causing a diplomatic rift between the allies who should be working together to prevent more migrants crossing the Channel.

The letter outlines what Boris Johnson thought the two countries should do to stop small boats crossing the channel.

The French Interior Minister said the Home Secretary, Priti Patel, would no longer be welcome at a meeting of European Ministers after the letter was tweeted.

Channel deaths: Diplomatic row escalates as France disinvites Priti Patel to crisis meeting

Channel 4 News has spoken to the family of the first named victim of Wednesday’s tragedy in the Channel.

They confirmed that Mariam Nouri Hamadameen, a student from Kurdistan in her twenties, died trying to reach British shores.

While authorities and families work to identify those who lost their lives, the political fallout has escalated.

Today, the French government disinvited Home Secretary Priti Patel from a planned meeting aimed at tackling the issue of people smuggling after Boris Johnson had earlier published a letter to President Macron on Twitter calling for greater action – a move that angered the French.

The family and friends of people who have died crossing the Channel say they are angry and frustrated because the people smugglers ‘have won’.

A community of asylum seekers in Liverpool mourn for the 27 who died in the Channel after their dinghy capsized on the journey to English shores. They say they know how challenging and frightening that journey is.
