Friedrich Merz to lead Germany’s CDU | DW News

Members of Germany’s biggest opposition party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) of former Chancellor Angela Merkel, elected Friedrich Merz as their new leader, the party announced on Friday.

Merz, making his third run for the CDU’s top post, won with 62.1% support in a vote among the party’s members, beating two centrist contenders — Norbert Röttgen and Helge Braun.

His share of the vote was easily more than the 50% and one vote needed to prevent a runoff.

The CDU and its Bavarian sister party the Christian Social Union (CSU) suffered an election defeat under the leadership of Armin Laschet, who had hoped to replace now former-Chancellor Angela Merkel. In the wake of that loss, Laschet stepped down, from the CDU leadership role.

Germany’s CDU set for shakeup after thumping in general election | DW News

After September’s general election, the German center-right CDU party was left reeling, losing its voters to the SPD and kingmaker parties, the FDP and the Greens. Now, as the conservatives seek to redefine themselves, women in the party want better representation and young people are calling for more of a say.

What does the collapse of Merkel’s CDU mean for Europe? | DW News

More than a week since Germany’s election, the momentum is clear. Germany’s next government will most likely be a coalition of three parties: the Greens and the Free Democrats, led by a Social Democratic Chancellor Olaf Scholz. This is not written in stone just yet, but its likelihood is strengthened because Germany’s conservatives are now weakened.

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives look anemic after hemorrhaging an unprecendented numbers of voters at the ballot box. Last month’s election results were the conservatives’ worst ever. Voter behavior has changed here in Germany. Tonight, we focus on the consequences.

What does it mean for the driving power of the European Union when Germany’s conservatives are no longer a political force to be reckoned with? How do you ease the existential worries at NATO or within the transatlantic world if Germany’s conservatives are no longer a reliable partner with power?

Discord grows in Merkel’s CDU after historic low result | DW News

The conservative bloc of outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel’s CDU and its Bavarian sister party, the CSU, is taking stock after suffering its worst federal election outcome since the party’s founding in 1945.

Much of the blame has been laid at the feet of Armin Laschet, whose campaign was marred by gaffes and a perceived lack of Merkel’s trustworthy and competent persona.

Markus Söder, the leader of the CSU, congratulated the SPD and its chancellor candidate, saying: "Olaf Scholz currently has the best chance of becoming chancellor, unequivocally."

Merkel’s CDU trails in polls in runup to German election | DW News

Germany’s conservatives are kicking off the final stage of their campaign ahead of September’s national elections. Chancellor Angela Merkel will be hoping to boost the flagging poll numbers of her would-be successor, Armin Laschet. Merkel is not standing for re-election. But polls show voters in general, and even some members of Laschet’s own party, are not happy with what’s been seen so far as a gaffe-filled campaign by Laschet. Speaking at the rally, Laschet aimed to portray himself as an effective crisis manager. He said Germany and Europe should play a stronger role in situations such as Afghanistan.
