Leaked notes from a meeting of SAGE scientists reportedly said requiring the tests would be “valuable” in the battle to contain the new Omicron variant.

Twenty-two cases have now been confirmed in Britain.

The hospitality industry is already seeing a drop in trade and Christmas parties are being cancelled amid accusations that government messaging hasn’t been clear.

Covid: No need to cancel Christmas party, says Boris Johnson

As more cases of the Omicron variant are identified, the government is adamant the vaccine booster programme will “buy the time” needed to assess it.

Boris Johnson has said everyone who is eligible will be offered one by the end of January.

The government is hoping this, coupled with today’s new mask measures and restrictions on travel from countries in southern Africa, will be enough to contain it.

But a leading professor of vaccinology in Johannesburg has warned Channel 4 News that it is travel restrictions like these that are hampering the global effort to tackle the variant.

The moment Boris Johnson lost his place in a speech and spoke about Peppa Pig World

After losing his place in notes during a speech to business leaders, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson went into an anecdote about Peppa Pig World and the success of the cartoon character.

"Yesterday I went, as we all must, to Peppa Pig World," Johnson told the business executives. "I loved it. Peppa Pig World is very much my kind of place: it has very safe streets, discipline in schools".

"Who would have believed that a pig that looks like a hairdryer or possibly a Picasso-like hairdryer, a pig that was rejected by the BBC, would now be exported to 180 countries with theme parks both in America and China?" he said. (Video: Reuters/CBI)

Boris Johnson facing Tory rebellion over social care plans for England

Boris Johnson is facing a backbench rebellion over a change to his plans for social care in England.

(Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)

A few months ago he announced proposals to cap the costs at £86,000, with extra help for people with less substantial assets.

But tonight, MPs will vote on an amendment changing the way those costs are worked out, which critics say will end up leaving some of the poorest pensioners losing a larger proportion of their wealth than the better off. One Conservative MP called it stingy.
