Singapore retail sales fall 2.8% in August, ending six-month growth streak

Singapore retail sales fell 2.8% in August, ending a six-month streak of growth. Market watchers said the culprits were higher COE premiums, and an economy that’s still recovering. Besides motor vehicles, fewer people also shopped at department stores. Observers said it’s due to heightened safe management measures in the first half of August and many choosing to stay home. More also went shopping for luxury items like watches and jewellery, which analysts said it’s because COVID-19 curbs have not affected higher income workers as much, with many still able to work from home.
