MLK Day Celebration to Commemorate its 27th Anniversary in Arizona

PHOENIX (PRWEB) January 16, 2020
The HeroZona Foundation and the American Legion Travis L. Williams Post 65 will host a special MLK Day Celebration recognizing the success of the “Play It Forward for the Arts” program at Post 65 (1624 E. Broadway Rd.) in Phoenix on Monday, January 20, at 3 p.m. The Celebration will honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and also recognize Senior Pastor Dr. Warren H. Stewart, Sr. from First Institutional Baptist Church, who was a driving force behind creating the MLK Day holiday in Arizona. It will also commemorate one year of the “Play It Forward for the Arts” program in Arizona.
“This year, we celebrate 27 years since Arizona adopted MLK Day as a state holiday, and I’m thrilled to honor Senior Pastor Dr. Reverend Stewart, who was the driving force behind the vote and recognition,” says U.S. Army Veteran, Play It Forward Program Creator and HeroZona Foundation Founder, Alan “AP” Powell. “One year ago on MLK Day, Pastor Stewart challenged our community with doing more for the residents of zip code 85040. The Herozona Foundation and Post 65 responded to that challenge, launching an effort with local schools and community partners, bringing underserved students to the arts.”
The HeroZona Foundation and members of the Travis L. Williams American Legion Post 65 spearheaded the creation of the ”Play It Forward For the Arts” program, exposing students to the arts at an early age, and giving them a head start with opportunities to learn, create and grow. ”Play It Forward” programs are supported by numerous community partners who advocate for the arts.
The first “Play It Forward for the Arts” engagement was held in early 2019, with high school students from Phoenix Union High School District attending August Wilson’s award-winning civil rights play “Two Trains Running” at the Herberger Theatre. The second “Play It Forward” event brought elementary students from the Roosevelt Elementary School District to see Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in a concert performance by the Phoenix Symphony, and the most recent program was a Pinkfong Baby Shark mini show and family resource fair at The Academies at South Mountain, which helped families prepare students for preschool and kindergarten, and was attended by nearly two thousand children and family members.
“The Phoenix Suns are proud to support the Play It Forward program, which is committed to the development of youth in our state,” said Phoenix Suns President & CEO Jason Rowley. “I’m honored to join several true American heroes and local community leaders as we celebrate the promise of a brighter future for the next generation of leaders throughout Arizona.”
APS Chairman, President & CEO Jeff Guldner also lauded the community program. “APS appreciates being part of the Herozona Foundation’s effort to increase access to arts and culture experiences to students of all backgrounds through the Play It Forward program,” he said. “We look forward to continued engagement and seeing it expand in the future.”
Speakers at the MLK celebration will include the current National Commander of the American Legion, James W. “Bill” Oxford, who will speak about the important work of the American Legion in local communities across America, as illustrated by Phoenix’s Post 65 spearheading the “Play It Forward” program. Other speakers will include Dr. Stewart, who will comment on Dr. King’s legacy and address continuing support for undeserved Phoenix neighborhoods.
Following the celebration at American Legion Post 65, the Phoenix Suns will host community leaders for an MLK Day celebration in the Ring of Honor suite, which will include on-court recognition of Rev. Stewart during half time and throughout the game. The commemoration of MLK Day is being brought back to the Suns Arena 27 years after approval of the MLK Day state holiday in Arizona in honor of the first gathering in downtown Phoenix at the same location in 1992.
“With our amazing arts community in Arizona, “Play it Forward for the Arts” is only limited by our imaginations,” said American Legion Post 65 member, retired Navy Rear Admiral Hal Pittman. “We love supporting these kids in their growth and appreciation of the arts.”
Arizona is the only state to institute the MLK holiday by vote of the people in 1992, after original initiatives to create the holiday were defeated in the early 1990s. After the holiday was approved by popular vote in November of 1992, the first MLK holiday in Arizona was observed with a major gathering at the American West Arena (now Talking Stick Arena) in downtown Phoenix. That celebration filled the arena and was attended by numerous celebrities, including Stevie Wonder and Rosa Parks.

Arizona Goat Yoga is the First Yoga Company to Become a Certified Autism Center™

Press Release – updated: Jan 2, 2020

MESA, Ariz., January 2, 2020 (Newswire.com) – Arizona Goat Yoga is now a Certified Autism CenterTM (CAC), designated by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). The designation requires staff to complete an autism sensitivity and awareness program and complete updated training to qualify for renewal every two years. Arizona Goat Yoga joins almost 60 organizations in and around Mesa, AZ, that have completed or committed to the CAC process, as part of a movement started by Visit Mesa. Mesa is now the first Autism Certified City.
“We’re so excited to be partners with IBCCES and look forward to exposing families in the autism community to the therapeutic benefits of spending time with animals. We know families will enjoy the time they have together while participating in goat yoga,” said owner Sarah Williams.
For almost 20 years, IBCCES has been the leader in cognitive disorder training and certification for healthcare, education and corporate professionals around the globe. IBCCES recognized that many families with children who have special needs have limited travel and recreation options. In response to this need, IBCCES created training and certification programs specifically for the hospitality and travel industry. More families and individuals are seeking out destinations and organizations that have completed a certification program through an accredited source. IBCCES is the only credentialing organization providing this type of certification, which includes evidence-based information as well as the perspectives of individuals with autism, alongside other tools and resources such as onsite reviews and customized recommendations to ensure the program is a long-term commitment and has a lasting impact.
“We’re excited to work with another unique experience to ensure all families and individuals have options,” said Myron Pincomb, IBCCES Board Chairman. “Organizations can no longer ignore the huge number of individuals looking for trained and certified options.”
IBCCES also created AutismTravel.com, a free online resource for families and individuals looking for travel and recreation options that lists certified destinations and travel professionals. Each destination listed on the site has met Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) requirements.

FMCA RV Club Announces Dates for Future RV Expos in Arizona, Nebraska, Georgia, and Wyoming

The Georgia National Fairgrounds & Agricenter in Perry is a popular venue for FMCA International Conventions and RV Expos.

We’re excited to be adding a new state to the list of those that have hosted an FMCA International Convention and RV Expo,” said FMCA national president Jon Walker. “Nebraska will be the 34th state on the list. The Lancaster Event Center is a first-class facility that should meet our needs well.

CINCINNATI (PRWEB) December 13, 2019
Preparations are in the works and registrations are coming in strong for the FMCA RV Club’s 101st International Convention and RV Expo —“Sunsets + Saguaros” — set to take place at the Pima County Fairgrounds in Tucson, Arizona, March 26 through 29, 2020.
The RV owners association, based in Cincinnati, Ohio, also has announced plans for the 102nd International Convention and RV Expo. Members will flock to the Lancaster Event Center in Lincoln, Nebraska, August 26 through 29, 2020. This will be the first international convention the RV owners group has conducted in the state of Nebraska.
“We’re excited to be adding a new state to the list of those that have hosted an FMCA International Convention and RV Expo,” said FMCA national president Jon Walker. “Nebraska will be the 34th state on the list. The Lancaster Event Center is a first-class facility that should meet our needs well.”
“The Lancaster Event Center is a nationally recognized facility that has five interconnected buildings set on 160 acres. That will give us plenty of room for RV parking, seminars, indoor and outdoor exhibits, and all of the other activities associated with an FMCA event,” said Doug Uhlenbrock, FMCA events director. “Plus, Lincoln is a vibrant capital city, and RV families and exhibitors will be able to explore all that it and the surrounding area have to offer.”
Registration for the Nebraska convention will begin on February 26, 2020.
Looking beyond 2020, FMCA has set dates and locations for other upcoming events.
RV owners can mark their calendars for two events at what to date is FMCA’s most popular venue — the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter in Perry, Georgia, which has hosted 11 FMCA conventions since 1996. FMCA’s 103rd International Convention and RV Expo will take place there March 10 through 13, 2021, and the 107th International Convention and RV Expo also is set for Perry, March 15 through 18, 2023.
In addition, FMCA has scheduled a trio of events for another destination that has proven popular with FMCA members: Cam-Plex Multi-Event Facilities in Gillette, Wyoming, which has hosted two FMCA RV expos in recent years. The future Cam-Plex dates are as follows: July 7 through 10, 2021, 104th International Convention and RV Expo; July 17 through 20, 2024, 110th International Convention and RV Expo; July 14 through 17, 2027, 116th International Convention and RV Expo.
More dates and locations will be added as plans progress.
Meanwhile, all RV owners are invited to join the fun at “Sunsets + Saguaros” in Tucson, March 26 through 29, 2020. Various registration options are available online at FMCA.com or by calling (513) 474-3622 or (800) 543-3622.
