Life sentence for murderers of a black runner in Georgia, Ahmaud Arbery

Three white men who chased and shot a black man as he ran through their neighbourhood have been sentenced to life in prison for his murder.

Ahmaud Arbery, 25, was pursued and cornered by Travis McMichael, 35, his father Gregory McMichael, 66, and their neighbour William ‘Roddie’ Bryan, 52, on 23 February 2020 in Satilla Shores just outside the city of Brunswick, Georgia.

The three men convicted of murdering Ahmaud Arbery were sentenced Friday, Jan. 7

A jury found the three white men accused of killing Arbery, a 25-year-old Black man guilty on most of the 29 charges they faced the day before Thanksgiving. Arbery was shot and killed on Feb. 23, 2020. Cellphone video leaked to the public shows two armed white men in a truck approaching the 25-year-old Black man as he runs down the road. One of the men, later identified as Travis McMichael, and Arbery struggle over McMichael’s shotgun before Arbery is shot and collapses.

Travis McMichael, his father Gregory McMichael and William "Roddy" Bryan, who recorded the video, are all charged with murder in Arbery’s death.

The three men convicted in the killing of 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery were sentenced to life in prison Friday. Travis and Gregory McMichael received life without parole, while their neighbor, William "Roddie" Bryan, has the possibility of parole after 30 years. Less than two hours ago, a judge sentenced Gregory and Travis McMichael to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The three men convicted of murdering Ahmaud Arbery were sentenced in Glynn County.
