U.S. in Touch With EU Allies as Russia Moves Troops Near Ukraine: Psaki

U.S. President Joe Biden is expected to speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Thursday. The American leader will also host German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Washington next month to discuss the situation with Ukraine amid questions over Germany’s resolve to stand firm against Russia.

Moscow, in the meantime, is deliberating over the American response outlining ways to defuse the conflict. Russia on Thursday criticized proposals that broadly rejected its demands that the alliance close the door to Ukraine’s potential NATO membership and roll back forces from former Soviet states. Russia left the door open to further talks.

U.S., NATO allies reject major Russian demands, offer different compromise

The United States and NATO on Wednesday rejected Russia’s demands that Ukraine never be allowed to become a member of NATO, and that the expansion of NATO since 1997 be rolled back. Russian officials said they would study the written response they received, but blamed the West for taking aggressive actions and said it will take the necessary retaliatory measures. Nick Schifrin reports.

Ukraine conflict: US and allies won’t budge over fears of Russian invasion | DW News

Representatives from Ukraine and Russia met in person today, together with their German and French counterparts in Paris. The four-way "Normandy format" has been used repeatedly since Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula in 2014.

Washington has delivered its written response to Russia’s security demands. The exact details of the letter remain unknown, but we do know that the US and its allies haven’t budged on some demands, like keeping the door open to NATO membership for Ukraine.
The letter is the latest step in the ongoing diplomacy over fears of a Russian invasion.

At recent joint meetings, Moscow demanded a guarantee that Ukraine would never join NATO, and that the alliance would cease military activity in former Soviet republics. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Washington has set out a "serious diplomatic path" to resolve the conflict. He added that the US made no concessions to the main demand on NATO membership for Kyiv. And speaking a short time ago, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said it was time for both sides to improve dialog and diplomacy by re-establishing their respective offices in Brussels and Moscow.
