Man on mission to find rightful owner of toy left behind on 9/11

For more than 20 years, a man has held onto a stuffed animal he found during the panic and confusion surrounding 9/11.

When the tragedy struck, he was driving in the area at the time of the attack and helped people flee the area.

With all that was going on, a child left behind the comforting toy in his car, but the good Samaritan has never given up hope on one day reuniting the toy with its rightful owner.

"As I drove there were people behind me walking on the highway, it’s just something you never seen," Queens resident Abe Wachsman said.

Wachsman was there during the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. And 20 years later, he’s determined to solve the mystery of the stuffed animal left behind.

Health Program For 9/11 Survivors, First Responders ‘Haphazardly’ Run, Members Say

For the more than 23,000 September 11 first responders and survivors who live outside of the New York area, a company called LHI administers the Congressionally funded World Trade Center Health Program. Michael Day, an EMT who rushed to ground zero that day and is now undergoing cancer treatment, says LHI’s program is run "haphazardly" and "horribly." Current and former employees tell NBC News’ Kate Snow of rampant delays and dysfunction, and warn that the company isn’t equipped to deal with a population with significant rates of post-traumatic stress. LHI said it’s "committed to treating every individual we serve with care and compassion" and will "carefully review" concerns. Following our initial NBC Nightly News report, members of two Congressional committees summoned LHI and the federal agency that oversees the health program to Capitol Hill for briefings.
