September 2, 2021: Texas abortion ban, New York floods, California fire, Taliban, China-U.S. tension

1. The U.S. Supreme Court refused to block a Texas ban on abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, dealing a major blow to abortion rights by leaving in place a state law that prohibits the vast majority of abortions.

2. Flooding killed at least nine people, swept away cars, submerged subway lines and grounded flights in New York and New Jersey as the remnants of Hurricane Ida brought torrential rains to the area.

3. South Lake Tahoe stood smoke-filled and largely deserted on Wednesday after crews fought back a huge, wind-driven wildfire, leaving the California resort town unscathed as flames crept on toward Nevada.

4. Afghanistan’s new Taliban rulers were preparing their government on Thursday, more than two weeks after the Islamist militia’s capture of Kabul brought a chaotic end to 20 years of war, while the economy teetered near collapse.

5. Senior Chinese diplomat Wang Yi has warned the United States that political tension between Beijing and Washington could undermine efforts by the world’s top two sources of greenhouse gas to co-operate in the fight against climate change.
