Pfizer says antiviral pill cuts risk of severe COVID-19 by 89%

Pfizer has its COVID-19 pill cuts the risk of hospitalisation or death by nearly 90% in high-risk adults. It’s the second antiviral pill behind Merck’s to demonstrate strong effectiveness in treating the coronavirus. The pill is used in combination with a HIV drug, which allows it to remain active in the body for longer at higher concentrations. More than 600 participants received the pill as part of the study. Pfizer said there were only six hospitalisations and zero deaths out of this group within five days of the onset of symptoms.
